Miguel Rodrigues is a Portuguese contemporary artist whose work examines the enduring relevance of the visual principles of the Portuguese Baroque within today's visual culture, shaped by architecture, spectacle and hyperreality. His practice explores how heritage and historical visual languages can be reinterpreted through contemporary materials, technologies and architectural contexts.
Born in Coimbra, a city deeply shaped by the Portuguese XVIII century Baroque, Miguel investigates the Baroque not as a historical style but as a visual system whose principles continue to resonate today. This ongoing research is described as Hyperbaroque, a sculptural language that reinterprets heritage through the lens of contemporary visual culture. His sculptures function as spatial interventions, creating a dialogue between heritage, architecture and contemporary visual culture.
His work has been presented through exhibitions, permanent installations and collaborations in Portugal, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Türkiye, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Kuwait. It includes collaborations with institutions such as the Catherine Palace, the Sakıp Sabancı Museum, the Mayer van den Bergh Museum, the Shaikh Ebrahim Center for Culture and Research and the DIFC Sculpture Park, as well as architectural commissions for Beymen Tersane Istanbul, designed by OMA, Four Seasons Park Lane and Les Temps Istanbul – Curio Collection by Hilton.
